Vehicle was parked in the driveway, not driven for approximately one week. The engine compartment started smoking then erupted in flames.
Tl* the contact owned a 2008 hyundai entourage. The contact stated that while the vehicle was parked in her driveway, she went outside and noticed smoke coming from the under the hood. The stated that she and family members attempted to extinguish the fire with hoses as flames were seen coming from under the vehicle. The fire department was called and extinguished the fire. A fire and police department reports were filed. No injuries sustained. The vehicle was deemed a total loss by the fire department.
While driving up an incline the vehicle began to make a grinding noise. Shortly thereafter the car began shaking, with the check engine and ESC lights both coming on, then a sudden stoppage of acceleration, and then engine shut down while the vehicle was still in motion. This caused the immediate loss of steering and the brakes to go soft.
Backing out of my driveway and my van started making a loud thumping noise. I was not able to go forward or in reverse. Looked underneath and found the driver's side lower control arm corroded and disintegrated, and the axel had come out of the transmission. There was a recall in 2014 for corrosion but all they did was spray something on that was supposed to protetct it. It did not work. If I had been anywhere other than my driveway it could have been an extremely bad situation as I lost control of my steering.
