What owners wrote
A few complaints as filed, shortened and with personal details removed. The first ones are among the most serious reports for this model year; the rest are typical.
While changing lanes on the highway, the top of the vehicle began to sway from side to side and caused the driver to lose control of the steering. The vehicle traveled away from the pavement, onto the right unimproved shoulder, and collided with a large tree. The vehicle immediately burst into flames and continued to burn until the vehicle was completely engulfed in flames. Most of the vehicle and all personal belongings were lost in the fire.
Vehicle struck a chevrolet astro head on traveling at approx. 35 MPH. The driver and passenger air bags did not deploy, and the seat belts did not lock. Driver suffered hand and foot injuries. The front passenger was thrown forward fracturing the left eye orbit on the rear view mirror. The middle back passenger was flung forward and thrown back, causing a shoulder injury, the second back seat passenger was in a car seat and suffered from just the force of the impact.
No off-road or deep water driving occurred prior to the incident. At 49,550 miles the transmission became inoperative. Vehicle would not move in any gear. Subsequently found water in transmission fluid which had damaged transmission parts requiring complete new system. As this system is supposed to be a closed system neither the local land rover service manager nor the aamco technicians have any idea how water could have entered the system. Land rover of north america refused any accountability.
2000 land rover discovery II. 1st I had the service engine soon light on and after spending almost $600.00 to extinguish the light, I drove the vehicle for (4) days, now all the lights are on. I checked on a land rover forum and they said the ABS / tc lights are an ongoing problem with this vehicle and there should be a recall. Everyone is spending a fortune. My land rover just came out of warranty (of course!).
