What owners wrote
Car was started at 9:30am at home- last driven night before locally. Car was driven @ 1 mile, parked, engine turned off, doors locked and left in parking lot. At 9:49 the local police called me to alert me that my car was on fire. There is footage of the fire on youtube. [link removed] the engine ignited for unknown reason. This car in un-repairable, there is no insurance claim. Receipts for work performed on this vehicle at the time of purchase and recent repair documentation is available.
I have not had failure yet, but there are several individuals who own the same exact car I own, a 2005 VW passat tdi. There is an ongoing concern at several news groups including [link removed] and other diesel enthusiast newsgroups about the oil pump chain unit that is in the VW bhw 2.0 turbodiesel engine. Many of these cars when they get out of warranty at 60k will start to have engine noise which is indicative of the oil pump chain unit chain weakening.
