What the data shows
Of the 36 complaints that include odometer readings, half describe a problem before roughly 70,000 miles.
Safety-related details: 1 complaint mentions a crash; 1 injury reported. Its complaints are less severe on average than those of 84% of model years in our database.
Looking only at complaints filed within five years of the model year (so older and newer years are comparable), the 2007 ranks 2nd most-complained-about out of 4 model years of the Mercury Mariner Hybrid with enough data (16 complaints in that window).
What owners wrote
A few complaints as filed, shortened and with personal details removed. The first ones are among the most serious reports for this model year; the rest are typical.
Driving home late at night, from babysitting my grandkids, was hit in the rear end by a drunk driver (arrested by the state police), going a high rate of speed. The drivers seatback broke from the impact and I was unable to maintain control. SUV rolled 3 times across the expressway. Side curtain airbags deployed. I suffered post concussive syndrome, whiplash, groin injury, both thumbs (from trying to hold myself up thru the roll) and a closed head injury. Both cars were totaled. I'm still in treatment.
Engine shuts off without any forewarning while vehicle is in motion. Dealer has attempted to repair the problem 2 times--problem persists. They say it is a problem with the cooling system for the hybrid batteries. They have replaced a wiring harness and the motor of the cooling fan.
While I was driving my 2007 mercury mariner hybrid at 65 MPH on a highway, the red triangle came on and the message "stop safely now." the car completely and suddenly lost all power. I tried to give it some gas but to no avail. I pulled over, shut it off for a few minutes, and then was able to restart it and make it home. I have 64,000 miles on the car. I see that there are service bulletins describing this problem, but am upset that I was not informed about it, especially since the warranty goes to 60,000 miles.
I was traveling with my 15 month old son driving roughly 45 miles an hour on a multilane street when the ABS light (orange) and a exclamation point light (red) turned on and my digital read out said service brakes. I would estimate that I lost 75% of my braking power. Due to the lack of stopping power I had to swerve onto a shoulder to avoid colliding with the car in front of me as my car gradually slowed down. I ended up in a turn lane which thankfully was clear at the time.
Passenger side rear inner fender well rusted completely through above the rear shock causing the shock to potentially break through and drop the whole suspension and cause and accident or flip over if it broke through during a turn. The rest of the vehicle hardly has any rust on it. The mariner shares the same inner sheet metal as the ford escape and there have been many complaints of this happening to escapes. My vehicle was studied at a ford investigation about 4 years ago for this problem.
